"After I Am Gone" by Laura Lippman

Cleveland Park Mystery Book Club August selection

Join us on Thursday, August 4, 6:30 p.m., to discuss a great contribution to Baltimore noir.

In an author's note, Laura Lippman, author of the Tess Monaghan series, says that the 1969 disappearance of Julius Salsbury brought her to consider its impact on the women in his life. Though this novel revolves around the character Felix Brewer, charismatic bookmaker and numbers kingpin, he is present on only a handful of pages. The central characters are the five women whom he deserts rather than face federal imprisonment on a gambling conviction: his wife, three daughters, and mistress. Though the author builds a murder mystery around them, her real story is the evolution of their lives after his disappearance. The story unfolds through the investigation, decades later, of the mistress's death by Roberto "Sandy" Sanchez, a retired Baltimore detective working cold cases for some extra cash.
