Every month, we discuss a book about important historical events, figures and more.

This month, in honor of Banned Books Week, we’ll discuss I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. This coming-of-age story by the celebrated writer and poet tells the story of Angelou’s early life. It is a powerful example of how strength of character and love of literature can overcome racism and trauma.

The book has been challenged by many parents, causing it to be removed from many schools’ reading lists. It makes frequent appearances on the American Library Association’s lists of most frequently challenged books, including on the top 10 list of most frequently banned from high school and junior high school classrooms and libraries.
