Get Your Gears Turning with these Steampunk Books

Where Fantasy and History Meet - and Twist

Are you a fantasy reader who has never found a historical novel you liked? Or the opposite – a historical fiction lover left cold by most fantasy novels? Steampunk might be just the genre for you! Steampunk is blatant historical anachronism, blending and bending history and fantasy to great effect. Try one of these books for a trip back in time - with a twist.

His Clockwork Canary by Beth Ciotta
The second book in the Glorious Victorious Darcys series featuring the Darcy siblings in a mashup of 1960s free love culture and Victorian England powered by steam. His Clockwork Canary features middle sibling Simon Darcy and sensational journalist Willie G., the nom de plume of Wilhemina Goodenough, as Simon tries to re-create the forbidden Mod technology that allowed the 20th century to collide with the Victorian era.

The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
The Iron Duke is the first steampunk book I ever read. It was so good I searched out other books in the subgenre, but it is still one of my favorites. Brook combines phenomenal world-building with complex characters and an action-filled plot that I couldn’t put down. Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth must join forces with Rhys Trahaearn, the Iron Duke himself, to stop a plot that could destroy everyone in England.

The Rift Walker by Clay and Susan Griffith
Second in the Vampire Empire series by husband and wife team Clay and Susan Griffith, this young adult series features a British Empire that is located in Africa and a vampire culture that has spread throughout the northern and far southern reaches of the globe. Princess Adele once again teams up with the vampire hunter Greyfriar in an attempt to stop mass genocide. With little control over mysterious powers that have only begun manifesting, will Adele be more help or hindrance to her subjects and ally?

The Clockwork Dagger by Beth Cato
First in a new series, The Clockwork Dagger features Octavia, the strongest medmage in history who desperately wants to live a quiet, productive life in the small village near the border. The two sides of the long-standing war have other ideas, however. But which side is trying to kill her and who can she trust when it seems that everyone around her is lying or betraying her? Octavia’s perilous journey crossing the country by air and her new knowledge of her powers and her Lady mean that the end of The Clockwork Dagger leaves as many questions as it answers.
