The Devil and His Pets

In many stories about the Devil, a pet helps him with his mischief, like a witch's familiar.  After all, being the ultimate evil in the world must be tiring, lonely work. Or perhaps the Devil is just a misunderstood character. Whichever the case may be, sometimes he needs the comfort and help that only a pet can bring. I originally wanted this list to be all about the Devil's cat, but I could only find a couple of examples, so I expanded the parameters to include other pets.

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Satan visits Moscow in the 1930's. He takes on the persona of a mysterious magician named Woland. One member of his traveling entourage is a giant talking black cat named Behemoth. Behemoth loves chess, vodka, and his guns. He also walks on two legs and can briefly turn himself into a human. Moscow literary high society will never be the same again. Behemoth is really more of a sidekick than a pet, but I like the character and the book, so here we are.

The Weirdness by Jeremy P. Bushnell
Billy wakes up hung over to find a stranger sleeping on his couch. Turns out that this stranger is the Devil, and he makes good coffee. Lucifer has an offer too good to be true, which of course means trouble. If Billy helps Lucifer find his cat, Billy’s unpublished novel will be accepted and he’ll receive a large advance.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
It’s the End Times. The Antichrist has been born, and the four horsemen have converged. When he is given a pet hellhound for his eleventh birthday, he names him Dog. His latent powers transform the hellhound into a dog with the naming. So, the Antichrist has a nice pet doggy. They have fun together, and the world doesn’t end.

On A Pale Horse by Piers Anthony
Zane killed death, which means that Zane now becomes Death. Since Zane shot him, he had to take over the job.

I had no idea one could kill Death.

Now Zane rides across the world on his pale horse escorting strangers to the next plane of existence. Satan has a plan for Zane, and if he doesn't cooperate, the Hellhouds will be sent after him.

Seventh Grave and No Body by Darynda Jones
