S.T.A.R. Baby Signs II (#Deaffriendly)

Next date: Monday, March 25, 2019, 1:30 p.m. (see all dates)

Pre-literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they are taught these skills in school. Singing, Talking and Reading (S.T.A.R.) are important parts of early literacy that can start at birth. If you are a caregiver or parent interested in enhancing pre-literacy development, fine motor skills, bonding and communication with your young child (under 5 years old), join us for our Deaf-friendly S.T.A.R. Baby Signs class to incorporate sign language into your daily life.

Co-facilitated by Ms. Tea and fabulous volunteer Ms. Roxy Nino* (pictured), each vocabulary lesson will cover a variety of practical themes such as colors and family. Lessons will incorporate a basic question-and-answer format with relevant vocabulary, books, songs and/or poems. First launched at Southeast Library in December of 2017, S.T.A.R. Baby Signs has moved to Petworth Library by popular demand. Admittance to this weekly program will be on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach a maximum of 30 individuals in our 2nd floor children's program room. Questions? For more information, please email tammeric.scurry@dc.gov

*After nearly 18 years supporting children’s programming for Discovery Kids, preschool development with Ready Set Learn, and  Animal Planet in New York, NY, and Silver Spring, MD, Roxy Nino moved to Southern Maryland. She is pursuing a new career path with further education in American Sign Language Interpreting and Deaf Studies. She supports making the world a #DeafFriendly place!
