Picture books for every dino lover

One of the most common reference questions I get asked is "Where are the dinosaur books?" It's easy to point to the non fiction dinosaur section and leave them to browse but there are also so many good dinosaur picture books if you take the time to look for them. Here is a list of some of my favorites.

Lizard from the Park by Mark Pett
Leonard finds an egg in the park one afternoon and takes it home. Soon the egg hatches and Leonard and Buster become fast friends. But as Buster grows and grows Leonard needs to make a hard choice between keeping his friend close and doing what is best for Buster. Simple but incredibly endearing this book will resonate with everyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to have a dinosaur as a pet.

Tiny T-Rex and the Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman
This incredibly cute book is great on so many levels. Tiny T-Rex is coming to terms with his short arms- but he doesn't let this get in the way of being their for his friend. From problem solving to friendship, this book has it all and is funny to boot!

Rex Wrecks It! by Ben Clanton
Rex is a dinosaur who just can't help himself when he sees a tower- he just has to knock it down! This book is a definite crowd-pleaser and is a fun re-read- especially if you do fun voices every time REX WRECKS IT!

Dinosaur Kisses by David Ezra Stein
This is a super silly book with lots of fun onomatopoeia. A baby dinosaur explores their world and tries to find the perfect friend who shares their interests.

We don't eat our classmates! By Ryan Higgins
Penelope the t-rex is having trouble remembering not to bite her classmates. This cute story is a great way to talk about a common problem in a fun and kid friendly way.

Dinosaur vs. the Library by Bob Shea
In a lot of ways these books (there are several all by the same author) are a lot like Rex Wrecks It! The dinosaur likes to roar at everything he comes across- but what happens when it's time to be quiet? Very simple and full of dino fun.

When dinosaurs came with everything by Elise Broach
This is a little longer than many of the books on this list but it is full of imagination, adventure and all kinds of dinosaurs. A kid and his mother are running their errands but every shop has a surprise in store!

Chalk by Bill Thomson
Another book filled with imagination, Chalk is a wordless book about a magical day where everything kids draw with chalk comes to life including a t-rex!

Crunch the shy dinosaur by Cirocco Dunlap
As the title suggests Crunch is very shy. He will need the help of the reader to come out and say hello in this interactive story. He's worth the effort!

Sea Rex by Molly Idle
Everyone loves the beach -- even dinosaurs. This book brings the reader along as Sea Rex does all the things worth doing at the beach. Kids will love the illustrations of the t-rex doing "human" things like sitting in an inner tube and putting on goggles.
