Friendship is the best ship
Whether they last for a day or for a lifetime friendships are some of the most important relationships we have. Here are some great reads that explore the magic of friends.
Bear and Squirrel are Friends...yes really! by Deb Pilutti
This silly and yet endearing book celebrates friends who get along despite their differences on the surface. Squirrel's other squirrel friends think Bear poses a danger to Squirrel- and Bear's other bear friends agree. But these two friends don't let other's opinions stand in the way of what they know is a special friendship.
Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira
Kids of all ages will love this funny book about a pig who wont stop saying ribbit. The beautiful illustrations only add to story as the other animals try to discover why the pig is acting so strangely.
Grumpy Bird by Jeremy Tankard
This book is great because everyone can relate to having a bad day- which is exactly what bird is having. He wakes up grumpy and things only go downhill from there- until his friends arrive to save the day.
Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers
Like most things Oliver Jeffers writes, this is a sweet story with beautiful illustrations. The story is a simple but powerful example of the power of friendship and the distance we will go for the ones we care about.
Don't play with your food by Bob Shea
This is one of my favorite read alouds, especially for preschoolers. Buddy the monster finds a group of tasty looking bunnies but they end up being much more than just a snack.
Hoot and Peep by Lita Judge
Another book with beautiful illustrations, Hoot and Peep celebrates the friendship between siblings. It's also a great tool for talking about conflict resolution between friends.
Who goes there? by Karma Wilson
The sound effects, as well as the suspense, in this book make it another great read aloud. Little mouse is building a perfect nest for the winter but he keeps thinking that something is missing- until he finds someone special to share his time with.
Tiny T-Rex and the impossible hug by Jonathan Stutzman
I love this book for many reasons -- it's funny, it's about dinosaurs, it demonstrates problem solving tactics, but most importantly (at least for this list) it's a great story about friendship. Tiny's friend is feeling down and all Tiny wants to do is show that he is there for his friend no matter what.
Bear snores on by Karma Wilson
Yes, this is the second book by Karma Wilson on this list, but it's worth it I promise. Another great read aloud due to the rhyming text and big illustrations this book is fun because in the end it's just about friends getting together and having a good time. There are several other books with the same friends which is also nice since kids love to read about familiar characters.
Art and Max by David Wiesner
I included this book because it's a great example of two friends just enjoying each other's company. Art and Max both love art and they explore their common interest with super fun results for the reader.
