Juneteenth Celebration

Friday, June 19, 2020, 12 p.m.

Join us on Facebook Live on Friday, June 19 at noon for a Juneteenth Celebration!

The virtual program will feature African drumming by native Washingtonian and Grammy nominated artist Corcoran Holt, spoken word  by poet, activist and DCPL employee, Micah Powell, and a presentation by native Washingtonian and genealogist Andre Kearns on how you can begin researching your ancestry and family history. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX with news the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. Please join us for a celebration of this historical event.
