Join us for a three-week playwriting workshop series with our partners from Mosaic Theater Company. Lead by local playwrights Gethsemane Herron-Coward and J.J., these workshops will give you tools for developing your playwriting skills from one of DC's most exciting community theaters.

We will host the sessions on Webex. Click this link and use the password "mosaic."

Week 1: Introduction to Playwriting (Sept. 3)
This workshop will be an overview covering the definition of a play, why plays are their own unique, viable, and important narrative medium, and various components such as plot structures, dialogue as the tool for dramatic action, play lengths and the components of a play. One play will be assigned to be read and discussed in week 3.

Week 2:  Character (Sept. 10)
This workshop will explore the creation of character, beginning with the perspective of the actor and translating those discoveries into text creation. Participants will break down the traits, rhythms, word choices and roles of people in their lives and in the world. Participants will then perform a short writing exercise where their characters have to work out a resolution to an imagined scenario.

Week 3: Setting as a Character (Sept. 17)
Continuing the themes from weeks 1 and 2, this class will begin with an analysis of the play assigned in week 1. Participants will then respond to writing prompts, create dialogue between characters, locate the inciting incident in a setting, and adapt previous text work. The workshop will conclude with feedback of the participants' plays in progress!
