Here's a short list of fantasy titles, all written by female authors. These audio books delve into fantasy worlds with unbelievable tests, heroism and clear references to aspects of the human experience. 

Adult titles

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor 
Binti, the first book in the series (Home and The Night Masquerade are the second and third), is a suspenseful and engaging fantasy novel. The main character steps away from traditional customs and braves a life-threatening journey where identity and worldview are challenged. 

How Long ‘til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin
This bold and engaging compilation of short stories infuses magic, spiritual beings, fantasy worlds, parallel universes (and the like), while exploring modern-day societal issues. 

Kindred by Octavia Butler 
Kindred, a time travel novel, is noted as a slave memoir, fantasy and historical fiction. The main character is transported from 1976 California to antebellum Maryland; racial conflict and suspense are major themes. 

Teen titles

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Divergent, first in the series, (Insurgent #2, Allegiant #3, and Four a companion volume) is based in a dystopian-Chicago world where citizens are divided into 5 subgroups (factions). The main character is coming-of-age and must decide which faction she will become a member of during her adult life. Among other coming-of-age stories, the main characters all endure an intense initiation process where they must overcome tests, psychological simulations and their own limitations (to name a few).

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
A Wrinkle in Time takes the reader on a magical adventure. The main characters time travel to a mysterious world where they encounter life-threatening events as well as threats to the universe.
