A Stroke of Malice by Anna Lee Huber
Scotland, January 1832. Kiera and Sebastian Gage are staying with friends to celebrate the New Year. Kiera doesn't usually attend grand celebrations but this time she's eager to join the merry making. During the Twelfth Night ball, a body is found in the castle crypt. Is it the family's son-in-law who went to Paris and hasn't been in touch for some time? The Gages are asked to investigate the mystery. Their investigation uncovers secrets about the family and the actual identity of the body in the crypt. When the son-in-law is reported to be seen in Paris, the case takes a sinister turn. The novel is the eighth in the Lady Darby Mystery series.

I recently discovered this series about a young widow with artistic talent who becomes an amateur sleuth in early 1830s Scotland. It's a fascinating trip back in time, "visiting" the various parts of Scotland and the isles with the Gage couple on their investigations. I recommend reading the books in order since Kiera's past features throughout the series.
