Child of the Civil Rights Movement: Author Talk with Paula Young Shelton

Monday, Jan. 18, 2021, 11:30 a.m.

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special virtual story time on Monday, Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m. featuring Paula Young Shelton who will read her book, Child of the Civil Rights Movement. Watch live on the Library's Facebook channel.

Shelton is the daughter of Andrew Young, who worked alongside Dr. King, and her book explores growing up in Atlanta, GA with her activist father and a community of leaders including Uncle Martin (Dr. King) and how these experiences shaped her childhood and influenced the woman she would eventually become. Following the reading, Shelton will be interviewed by two members of DC Public Library's Teen Council about the importance of civic engagement.

The special story time is the kick-off event, for our new civic engagement focused monthly series: “Our City, Our Stories” which will feature one virtual program around local government and governance and one virtual literary program per month featuring authors or books about Washington, D.C. You don’t want to miss our first event!
