James Hill lists his top four favorite manga series

Written by James Hill, high school library intern.

Today I will share four different manga series. I am writing about these types of books because they are one of my favorite genres. I have read all of these series and I understand them on a good level. The books I will be talking about are One Piece, Black Clover, One Punch Man, and The Promised Neverland

One Piece by Eiichiro Oda
One Piece is an adventure story about a character named Luffy and his pirate crew. The main characters are Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Robin, Chopper, Franky, and Brook. The series starts off in East Blue, which is one of the 5 main areas of the sea. Luffy starts off his journey on someone else’s pirate ship with a boy named Coby. They work together to get off of that pirate ship and go somewhere else. The theme of this book is to follow your dreams. Each character in this story has a dream they wish to strive for and these dreams eventually bring all of the characters together on the same journey. Whether it be Luffy’s dream of becoming the king of the pirates, Nani’s dream to become rich, Zoro’s dream to become the world’s strongest swordsman, or anyone else’s all of their dreams bring them together throughout the story. I recommend the book because the storytelling is amazing, no stone is left unturned. The author makes sure everything is covered in this series and many different plot points that one would consider irrelevant after it’s done becomes extremely relevant once again at a later time in the series. The series is unpredictable and fun so you should read it if you want a time consuming adventure.

Black Clover by Yuki Tabata
Do you want to see a true fighting against the odds story? Because that’s what
Black Clover is. The main character Asta is a peasant and orphan in the clover kingdom and he lives with other orphans in a church. He and his friend Yuno wish to become magic knights that will one day become the wizard king. The main characters of this series are Asta, Yuno, the black bulls, and the other magic knights. This show has a couple of themes. The first is to never give up. The main character has this phrase which is “never giving up is my magic”. This is because even when he’s a peasant and he’s the only person in society who doesn’t have any magic he still works hard to try and become the wizard king. The other theme is fighting against the odds. In this series, peasants are born with almost no magic and so they have very little chance to pull themselves up in society. The royals are born with large amounts of magic which keeps them and their families at the top. Asta, who is a peasant, and has no magic which is even worse than being a peasant with little magic. But he’s still fights against the odds to bring himself up in society and to one day become the wizard king. I recommend this series because of its great characters and moments within the show. The moments in this show get your adrenaline pumping because you don’t know what may happen next and because the pacing is so quick. The characters in this show are very memorable and fun. I would recommend black clover mainly for these two reasons.

One Punch Man story by ONE, art by Yusuke Murata
Do you like satires with great characters? One Punch Man is a satirical story about a character that beats every enemy with one punch. The main characters are Saitama and Genos. Saitama is a character who wished he was strong enough to beat any enemy with one punch. He then worked hard and was then able to do just that. But when he was able to beat enemies with one punch, he became saddened by it. He was bored because no one could pose a challenge to him. He became a hero to find enemies that may be able to challenge him. The theme of this series is to be careful what you wish for.
I went into it early but Saitama is saddened once he achieves his dream to become the strongest. Although he saves many lives he is bored with his life and wants a challenge. I recommend this book because of its funny moments and characters. This show is lively and funny but also has very serious and well-written characters and different moments.

The Promised Neverland by Kaiu Shirai
Do you wonder what it would be like if humans were food just like animals are? Well, this series answers just that. The main characters are Emma, Ray and Norman. These kids grew up on what is called a farm. They get to play, learn, eat and sleep there. They are surrounded by tons of kids both older and younger than them. But there is one secret with the farms. The children are being bred so that their brains can be eaten by demons. Our characters want to find a way to help everyone on all of the farms escape. The theme of this show is teamwork. None of the problems in this show get solved without the different characters working together. It shows the importance of community and being able to work with others. I recommend this series because it’s a rollercoaster of an adventure and it’s unpredictable. It’s very engaging and the story is very well written.
