A princess goes undercover in a rival kingdom. Travel on a quest to the furthest edges of an empire. Below are two adult fantasy novels I enjoyed reading this month. Copies are available to check out and download from the library.

Capture the Crown by Jennifer Estep
Crown Princess Gemma Ripley of Andvari publicly enjoys her royal status but she prefers being a spy. As the story begins, she's working undercover as a miner, looking to discover why tearstones (magical gemstones) are being stolen. Gemma also is shocked to see Prince Leonidas (Leo) Morricone of Morta, who has a connection to her past, at the mine. Why is he there? When Gemma's life is in danger, Leo takes her to safety at the royal palace in Morta. They agree to work together to find answers about the tearstones and what Queen Maeven (Leo's mother) is plotting. During the Queen's birthday celebrations, Gemma and Leo make an explosive discovery that could put all of the neighboring kingdoms in danger once again. This novel follows up on the "Crown of Shards" trilogy.
Bonus: An excerpt for the next novel in the "Gargoyle Queen" series!

The Empire's Ruin by Brian Staveley
The first book in a new series! After a mission goes wrong, Commander Gwenna Sharpe is sent to unexplored lands to find if there are more giant war hawks. Two priests are forced to flee their city only to be captured and forced to train as gladiators. Akiil, a monk turned con man is summoned to the imperial Annurian palace for possible knowledge about the kenta gates, magical portals allowing access to other places in the empire. What happens with these lead characters will affect the future of the Annurian Empire. An incredible, action packed read! The author features a diverse world, expanding on his previous "Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne" series. I recommend starting with that series for background to this novel.
