Artemisia is a young novice training to be a Gray Sister, cleaning the bodies of the dead so they don't haunt the living. The work means she won't have to hear other people talk about her. When an army attacks her convent, Artemisia's actions set off a series of events in the new dark fantasy novel Vespertine by best selling author Margaret Rogerson.

During the attack, Artemisia discovers the box holding a saint's relics that she was given has a revenant, a powerful being that could destroy her. Her split second decision has consequences for both of them. Artemisia doesn't have help dealing with the revenant: all the vespertines (priestesses trained to handle high relics) are dead and memories are lost to time. With some help, Artemisia joins the fight to save the kingdom and defeat the dark forces threatening to destroy everything. That's if the revenant doesn't betray her first.
I enjoyed this story and watching Artemisia's personal growth. Since she's still experiencing physical trauma from her childhood, making friends her age is a challenge for Artemisia. When the revenant isn't directing Artemisia to do something in a situation, it has its moments of humor and sarcasm with her.

The novel is available to download from Overdrive.
