The Intimidating Book Club: In Search of Lost Time

Swann's Way

Overview of The Intimidating Book Club
Intended for those who have always wanted to read that one classic novel of gargantuan proportions but never did (or didn't finish). This group will read a notoriously lengthy book widely considered a classic, section by section, and meet monthly at 6:30 p.m. ET for a minimum one-hour discussion that may last through 8 p.m.

Together, we'll get to the finish line. One word at a time.

Series 6.a: Swann's Way by Marcel Proust

There is no preferred translation. However, please take care to select an unabridged copy. eBook copies are available on Overdrive at dclibrary.overdrive.com. You may also check out a physical copy at a DC Public Library branch.

At the penultimate discussion on May 24, 2022, I will check in with the group to see if there is interest in moving forward with Within a Budding Grove.

Please come to each meeting having read the following volumes:

March 22: "Overture" (Please note If you're using the Davis translation, "Overture" is Part 1 of "Combray")

April 26: "Combray"

May 24: "Swann in Love" (stop before But his meticulous prudence was defeated one evening when he had gone out to a party.) (Please noteIf you're using the Davis translation, the stoping point between the third and fourth meeting is on pg. 334)

June 28: "Swann in Love" (begin with But his meticulous prudence was defeated one evening when he had gone out to a party.)

"Place-Names: The Name"

Note: While the branch is currently closed for in-person discussions, we continue to meet virtually. Please email my.nguyen@dc.gov for additional details and the link to join.
