Booktalking "My Life As a Rhombus" by Varian Johnson

18-year-old Rhonda's life revolves around mathematics and obtaining an engineering scholarship to a fancy college. She tutors kids in math and thrives on obtaining good grades. Ever since her mother died and she had relationship problems with a boy, she has thrown herself into her studies. She loves working with formulas, getting logical answers and the freedom from angst that she experiences while solving problems. As an accolade for her devotion to numbers and figures, the twin girls that she tutors refer to her as "Rhonda the Rhombus." Everything is going according to plan for the high school senior.

Then Bryce Mitchell, the director of the tutoring program, throws a curveball her way.
He assigns her a high school student to tutor in math.
Not just any high school student.
Sarah Gamble, member of the in crowd, popular, beautiful, seemingly without a care in the world.
Rhonda cannot take it. She begs Bryce to reconsider. She and her friends Gail and Xavier have sworn off associating themselves with the popular kids since they have had so many problems with them in the past. But Bryce insists that it is a done deal. Rhonda assesses her options and reluctantly decides to face the challenge head on, for better or for worse. Surprizingly, the two girls find that they have much in common, and they enjoy talking to each other. Plus... Rhonda has a full-on crush on Sarah's brother, David, and he seems to feel similarly about her. Sarah's math scores gradually improve under Rhonda's dedicated tutelage, and she achieves a passing grade in math. Success!
During the course of their conversations and tutoring, Sarah shares a secret with Rhonda. She is pregnant and has not told her parents. She is unsure about whether to get an abortion or have the child. She has no idea how to deal with this gargantuan dilemma, and she leans heavily on Rhonda for support. Luckily, her teenage friends has the knowledge and resources to assist her. However, dealing with her mother's reaction to Sarah's pregnancy status does not make the situation any easier to navigate.
Rhonda continues to navigate her relationship with David and the college admissions process while Sarah plans a divergent future for herself.

This a very skilled examination of the complexities that are involved with teen pregnancy. I love the cover art with the chalkboard and math formulas.
