The Intimidating Book Club: In Search of Lost Time

In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower

Overview of The Intimidating Book Club
Intended for those who have always wanted to read that one classic novel of gargantuan proportions but never did (or didn't finish). This group will read a notoriously lengthy book widely considered a classic, section by section, and meet monthly at 6:30 p.m. ET for a minimum one-hour discussion that may last through 8 p.m.

Together, we'll get to the finish line. One word at a time.

Series 6.b: In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower by Marcel Proust

There is no preferred translation. However, please take care to select an unabridged copy. eBook copies are available on Overdrive at dclibrary.overdrive.com. You may also check out a physical copy at a DC Public Library branch.

Please come to each meeting having read the following volumes:

July 26: Part One: "Madame Swann at Home" through the sentence "But you ought to know a great deal better than I do since you're in her confidence, the great favorite, the crack, as the English say" (approximately 151 pp.)

August 23: Part One: "Madame Swann at Home" beginning "Doubtless, in such perfect coincidences as this, when reality folds back . . ." through the end of "Madame Swann at Home" (approximately 150 pp.)

September 27: Part Two: "Place-Names: The Place" through the sentence "When he's in Paris, he still goes to the cemetery nearly every day." (approximately 150 pp.)

October 25: Part Two: "Place-Names: The Place" beginning "The morning after Robert had told me all these things about his uncle . . ." through the sentence "I never saw her except with a hat on" (approximately 152 pp.)

November 22: Part Two: "Place-Names: The Place" beginning "Before rejoining Elstir, I caught sight of myself in the glass" through the end of the novel (approximately 150 pp.)

Note: While the branch is currently closed for in-person discussions, we continue to meet virtually. Please email my.nguyen@dc.gov for additional details and the link to join.
