December Staff Pick: Twas the Night by Pamela McColl

In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore recited his new poem "The Night Before Christmas" to his family. The following year, a major New York state newspaper printed Moore's poem, and it became a holiday classic. A new non-fiction book titled Twas the Night : the Art and History of the Classic Christmas Poem by Pamela McColl celebrates the 200th anniversary of the poem.

The book details the history, social customs and culture, and literary influences behind Moore's poem. Each chapter features full color period artwork, archival images, and photos. The popularity of "The Night Before Christmas" inspired other favorite holiday characters and has been retold by others. The author spent 10 years researching the history of Mr. Moore's poem.

You'll notice that Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer isn't among the reindeer in Moore's poem. He made his first appearance in a coloring book published by the now defunct Montgomery Ward Department Store in December 1939.

Copies of these two titles are available to check out and download from the library.
