February Staff Pick: "Choosing Brave" by Angela Joy

Staff Recommendation

Follow the life of early Civil Rights pioneer Mamie Till-Mobley in Choosing Brave by Angela Joy, illustrated by Janelle Washington.
The award winning picture book biography for independent young readers is an accessible and informative introduction to Mamie Till-Mobley and her quest for justice for her son Emmett. The illustrations are done with black paper and layered tissue paper. A note by the author and illustrator, historical timelines, glossary, and more follow at the end of the text. Copies are available to check out and download from the library.

At LibLearnX in New Orleans last month, Virginia based illustrator Janelle Washington was the winner of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Illustrator Award. The book is also a Caldecott Honor selection. View the complete list of the 2023 Youth Media Awards presented by the American Librarian Association.

The special exhibit "Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See" is in the Great Hall at MLK Library now through March 12.
