An Exhibition Series through a Partnership with DC Public Library and the Maryland Institute College of Art

The community is invited to contribute to the diverse stories of these neighborhoods with many opportunities to participate! Keep track of all of our events on Facebook.
Through poetry, photography, and book arts, Open Stories seeks to create and share the diverse stories of our D.C. neighborhoods. Open Stories will provide opportunities for people in the community to make connections through art. This exhibition series is a partnership between DC Public Library and Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Curatorial Practice Program.
Poetry, Murals and Monuments @ Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library is an interactive exhibition where participants will experience Shaw’s vibrancy and culture through its murals, monuments and the spoken word of D.C. poets. Participants and poets will then contribute their experience to an exhibition at the Shaw Library. The walking tour took place on Saturday, June 18. The opening reception for the exhibition will be Tuesday, July 5 at 7 p.m.

Open Shelves @ Mt. Pleasant Library is an interactive exhibit for our multilingual community to learn from each other while becoming authors, artists, and collaborators in handmade artists’ books. The exhibit will grow as the community continues to add words and art to the books while the exhibit is on view. The focus is on community curation, collaborative art and the concept of ‘open works,’ which are pieces finished by the user, a term coined by philosopher Umberto Eco.
