They say that writing is a solitary task. That's true, but sometimes you need the energy of a warrior, the inspiration of a teacher and the input of thoughtful peers to keep working at it.
If you have a piece of fiction or non-fiction in the works, or you’ve completed a draft, join O. Dada (Library Associate and Pushcart Prize winner) for a weekly writers' workshop at the Palisades Neighborhood Library. These books all explore controversial and emotionally charged themes and experiences. Some stories are personal while others are more socially broad. But each one confronts matters that are often swept under the rug.
The Art of Leaving by Ayelet Tsabari
The books in this compilation are for the most part biographical. Spirituality played a deep and transformative role in the lives of each of the subjects. It catalyzed their lives and moved them from anonymity to influence. It got them over fears, hurdles, tragedies, insufficiencies and other types of adversity. Self-realization is a major theme in this list. These books explore the question of what we can become if our beliefs about who we are change.
Hi! My Name is DeVaughn Proctor. I am a Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) worker and I am assigned to the Palisades Library. In the attached staff photo, I'm the one wearing a Super Mario Hat.
One of the things we’ve been doing this summer is arts and crafts on Tuesday afternoons. It’s a part of the 2019 Summer Challenge. Here’s an example of one of the Tuesday programs. We made a wind sock with puffy clouds made out of shaving cream mixed with glue. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

"I hit the baseball
it made everything blossom
even the people"
by James Shure
"Judgmental strangers
Your colorful modesty
My cloaked friend"
I am drawn to people's personal stories of triumph over adversity. I think often about the imagery and symbolism of the lotus plant. The lotus shoot has to grow through the mud of swamps and other still bodies of water. The unseen shoot struggles upward towards the light and when it pierces the surface, a beautiful flower unfurls. What these stories have in common is they explore the resiliency of human peoples despite the misfortunes that can happen in any person's life.
Let your imagination have at it conjuring up the images and feelings from these novels. A wide range of emotions as well as personal, social and political experiences are explored giving the reader a window into other cultures and points of view.
The signature of all things by Elizabeth Gilbert
How does the desire to be free drive human beings to do extraordinary feats of love and courage? When a person’s freedom is abridged or violated, their pursuit of happiness is cut off. Choices then have to be may to secure freedom, a natural right endowed on all life.
