Juliet is dealing with a lot of stuff at once: she’s recently come out to her family (it didn’t go so well), and she’s about to move across the country to start an internship with her favorite author, who’s definitely doing her part to keep Portland weird. Juliet wants to use this summer to figure everything out, but is that even possible?
 
Since You’ve Been Gone [6] by Morgan Matson
 
Emily and Sloane were inseparable- at least, that’s what Emily thought. Sloane was the loud and outgoing one, making Emily feel brave. But when Sloane just leaves without an explanation, only leaving Emily a to-do list full of things she would never do on her own, Emily decides to not only take on Sloane’s list, but to take on the mystery of where Sloane went. (Warning: this book will make you want to make your own summer to-do lists, go for a run, and do something impulsive.)
 
Over You [7] by Amy Reed
 
Max and Sadie are also inseparable, but for Max that isn’t always such a good thing. Wherever Sadie goes, Max is expected to follow, even when Sadie drops everything to go to Nebraska and live on a farm. But while Max never imagined spending her summer on a farm, she also never imagined liking it. As Max learns more about herself (and maybe about Dylan, a cute guy also on the farm), she also comes into conflict with what Sadie wants, and what she doesn’t want for Max.

Ever since her parents died (while she was having her first kiss, by the way) Cameron can really only be herself when she’s swimming. Living in Montana, Cameron lives for the summers where she can swim competitively and be herself in ways she can’t be during school. At least until Coley Taylor moves to town, and Cameron doesn’t think she can hide anymore. (Psst: This is a perfect book for when you want to experience every single emotion at once. It will probably also make you want to go to Montana.)
 
This One Summer [10] by Jillian and Mariko Tamaki
 
Rose and her family always go to the beach every summer, and Rose always hangs out with Windy, who’s like a little sister to her. But this year things are a little different: Rose’s parents are fighting, and Rose and Windy need a distraction from the drama, to only find themselves getting into something they may not be ready for.
 
Burn Baby Burn [11] by Meg Medina
 
New York City may be a disaster, but so is Nora’s life. Her brother Hector is getting more and more out of control, her mother is struggling to make rent, and her father is basically out of the picture since he moved out and started a new family. Oh, and did we mention that there’s a serial killer on the loose? Set in 1977 during the Son of Sam murders, this book will distract you from any heat wave.
 
 
Swim the Fly [12] by Don Calame
 
Matt and his friends have one goal before tenth grade: to see a real live naked girl. Sure, neither of them have been on a date, or kissed any girls, but who’s to let reality get in their way? Matt’s other goal is just as hard: to master the 100 yard butterfly, the hardest race a swimmer could do.  If you’re looking for a book that’s equal parts crude and hilarious, you can’t go wrong with this choice.
