You're invited to attend the monthly Southwest Kitchen Table Book Discussion, the last Saturday of every month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This month's discussion (Sat., Dec. 31) features Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Sign up and share your talent from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Southwest Public Library, 900 Wesley Place S.W.Open Mic events are on January 11, February 8 and March 14.Suggested open mic themes: January 11= A retrospective of 2011; February 8 =  Creating African-American history; March 14 = Honoring female authors/performers.

Summer Reading Program Book Review Winner

Southwest Neighborhood Library congratulates Naliah Penic for her winning book review on the novel, Money Hungry, by Sharon Flake! Penic wrote an engaging and thought-provoking book review that illuminated the strengths and thematic complexity of the popular young adult novel. For her literary effort, Penic took home a brand new laptop that will surely support her academic endeavors.

Southwest Re-Opens after Mini-Makeover

Southwest Neighborhood Library re-opens Monday, Oct. 3 after mini-makeover.  The Library now has new carpet, fresh paint and an improved teen space featuring new Mac computers.  Join Mayor Gray and Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 10:45 a.m. as they kick off DC Reads and highlight the improved Southwest Library.

The Kitchen Table Book discussion scheduled for Saturday, December 19, was canceled due to a snow-related library closure. Marley and Me by John Grogan has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010.

Chess Club!

Southwest's Chess Club March Schedule

Express yourself through poetry, story, memoir, and more.  The workshop starts on January 20 at 6:30pm and will continue every Wednesday after that.  For ages 12 - 19.For more information please contact kelly.navies@dc.gov

Ongoing Programs @ Southwest

Basic Computer Tutorials: Every Thursday from 10am-12pm. Each class features a different topic ranging from an introduction to personal computers, basic skills concerning internet navigation, and tutorials for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Poetry Wednesdays:  A spoken word jam hosted every second Wednesday of each month that features local performance artists performing original compositions and renditions of their favorite works from other writers.
