Since it is the first week of school, the library is taking a little breather from programming during this week. We only have one regular program scheduled. However, we do have our Summer Reading Roundup Party this weekend. All of those summer readers who completed the program (read 6 books or more and turned in their reading lists to a librarian) are invited to attend our party.

It's that time of the year again when teachers are getting their classrooms ready and children are getting all those school supplies together. September is just around the corner. You know what that means! Wait...did you say back to school? Well, yeah, it means back to school. But, really, what I was going to say, is that when I think September, I think MUSHROOMS!

Great Summer Programs for Children and New Programs Coming This Fall

The Children’s Room at the Takoma Park Library has been busier than ever this summer. Along with summer reading registration and special summer reading performers, we have also been keeping up with our regular programs. Programs such as Preschool Story Time, Crafternoon (see photo), and Pajama Story Time have been popular this summer, and we will continue them into the fall. We also added one new program this summer, Art in the Afternoon.

Takoma Park Library Receives Grant to Preserve Its Archival Collection

The Takoma Park Neighborhood Library is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a grant from the District of Columbia Humanities Council. Earlier this summer Children’s Librarian Lindsay Halkola wrote a grant to secure funding for the preservation of the Takoma History File. The D.C. Humanities Council provided funding for the library to acquire proper archival storage and exhibit space for the Takoma History File. The Friends of the Takoma Park Library are also providing funding.

Takoma Park Residents Love Their New Library

A few months ago the renovation of the Takoma Park Neighborhood Library was completed. The branch closed in October 2008 for a six-month, $1.95 million renovation, and it reopened in March of this year. The renovation included the development of a vestibule entry that reflects the original style as well as a full restoration of the woodwork, improved lighting, a new layout and floor plan, replications of original furniture, and external work on the masonry and metal.

TumbleBooks for Children

Kids love animated, talking picture books, which teach the joy of reading. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which the parent can read to the child, or the child can have read to them via an audio soundtrack. The site also offers word searches and other puzzles and games.Some titles are available in Spanish and others in French.

Library Makeover

The Library recently completed an extensive “makeover” of this building. The makeover included preservation and restoration of original interior finishes; installation of more appropriate lighting, furniture and floor coverings; elevator improvements; and electrical and fire alarm upgrades.
