Summer Challenge Book Club

For Summer Challenge, we want you to take a little bit of time each day to read, but we also want you to aim high with your reading and connect with others by reading good books. This summer, we have chosen one book each month for you to read from our online collection to read and discuss. On the fourth Thursday of the month, we will host an online discussion lead by DC Public Library staff and friends.   

Middlemarch

The Intimidating Book Club: Middlemarch

Intended for those who have always wanted to read that one classic novel of gargantuan proportions but never did (or didn't finish). This group will read a notoriously lengthy book widely considered a classic, section by section, and meet monthly for a one hour discussion.

Contemporary fiction with strong female characters

Women are amazing. Their is no limit to their abilities. One needs not to be afraid of the future so long as women will be there. Read these novels to find out how these female protagonists reflect, react and sometimes even rebuild in the wake of numerous challenges.

William Shakespeare

Shakespeare Society: The Histories

The Shakespeare Society is a monthly Shakespeare reading and discussion group. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. We intend to read and discuss every single Shakespeare play in series-order, grouped in several series reflecting his tragedies, comedies, problem plays, romances and histories. There is no preferred edition. The West End Neighborhood Library's adult services librarian will facilitate the discussion. Series 2 will focus on Shakespeare's histories; the full reading list for Series 2 is as follows:

Rosedale Book Club

New Year, New Book Club!  Rosedale is pleased to announce the inaugural meeting of the Rosedale Book Club on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.  We will meet every second Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss our monthly title. Books can be checked out at the Rosedale reference desk. Hope to see you there!  

The Plato Project: The Republic

West End Neighborhood Library's Plato Project aims to read and discuss a variety of Platonic dialogues. For fall of 2019 through summer of 2020, we will read all ten books of Plato's The RepublicThis is strictly a discussion-based group and there is no preferred translation. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month until Aug. 4, 2020.
