Travels to Challenging Places

There are places that we are advised or warned not to travel to. There are places that are unstable. There are places that are downright dangerous and that should be avoided at all cost. Syria and Mali come to mind. Our Department of State keeps citizens abreast with its list of “Travel Advisories.” It’s usually a good idea to take a look at this service before embarking upon a trip outside the United States. I’ve selected a few graphic novels and one other book to highlight traveling to countries such as these.

My Introduction to Graphic Novels

Shamefully, I have to admit that I read my first graphic novel two months ago. I wrote them off as childish and because of my ignorance I have missed out on great books over the years. As with most of the books I read, I look for characters that I see myself in: characters that are beautiful, smart, responsible and passionate about the world around them. What makes it extra special for me is finding these qualities in Black people across the African diaspora. Surprisingly, finding graphic novels with such specific criteria was not hard to find in our catalog.

Visually Driven Graphic Novels

Who needs all those dialogue bubbles anyway?

Why spend so much time reading, when the whole genre includes visuals?  This is a special pet peeve of mine from reading all those long dialogue exchanges in the X-men comics of the 90's.  Then cut to a fight scene, then back to dialogue at the mansion. So here is a little medicine for those who want the pictures to carry the load:   Unflattening by Nick Sousanis

Divinity in Graphic Novels

Comic books and graphic novels, much like all of literature, have touched upon every topic under the sun. The following titles showcase the inventive ways writers and artists have depicted the Divine in graphic works for adults.

Graphic Novels about Parenthood and Getting Pregnant

Are you a parent who is plagued by lack of sleep, toddlers who refuse to go to bed, constant tantrums, or do you have the theme song of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood stuck in your head? Then perhaps it’s time to unwind with a graphic novel about parenting. The following is a list of books about the experience of parenting: becoming a parent, struggling as a parent or just a couple of laughs about that crazy process of raising a kid.

A Bloody Good Time

Graphic novels featuring ghosts, goblins and other ghouls.

If I had my way, Halloween would be a 6-month affair. I especially love all things spooky. Horror as a genre has generated some of my favorite pieces of media out there, including movies, television, video games, books and especially comics. The following are some of the excellent, horrific graphic novels I've found on our shelves. Make sure you have a blanket, a light and your door locked tight. These pieces won't let you go to sleep too easily afterward. A final aside for you too: all of the following volumes are absolutely, 100% recommended for adults.
