Stories in verse for fourth- to eighth-graders

We're wrapping up National Poetry Month, and while I've personally spent the month reveling in re-reading all of my favorite poems, I realize that not everyone loves poetry as much as I do. For some people, this disinterest -- or even distaste -- has to do with the fact that there isn't enough plot in a poem; people like a good narrative.

Find your poem at the library, or bring one in to share

On Thursday, April 30, pick a poem that moves you. Pick a poem that amuses you. Pick a poem that confuses you. Put it in your pocket and see how it changes your day. From the Academy of American Poets:

A Contemporary Celebration of National Poetry Month

Six books that show contemporary poetry's range

To celebrate National Poetry Month, I've compiled a brief list of six (roughly) contemporary books of poetry that help display the range of styles, content, and ambitions that poetry offers readers today. With more poets writing now than perhaps any preceding age, it's literally impossible to read and enjoy all that the last couple of years have produced, let alone the last few decades. But never fear! There are poems to satisfy just about any reading appetite, and the DC Public Library has an excellent collection to choose from.
