Love, Lesbians, and the Luminous Dead

Fantasy and Science Fiction with LGBTQA protagonists

In fantasy and science fiction novels where dragons and robots exist, sometimes side by side, it can often feel like protagonists who are part of the LGBTQA community seem rarer than unicorns. But that has been changing recently with more and more amazing books being published in recent years.

At Play With the Future

How Society Changes with Technology

I love the idea that rather than the future being a source of pure concern, there is a lot of hope out there for things to come.  In that vein I am reviewing both some classics and some newer books on the theme of Science Fiction. Last Tango in Cyber Space by Steven Kotler

The Heat Wave is Gone, but Next Comes August

Cool reads for hot summer days

Summer in adulthood can be hard. Most jobs don't include a three month summer vacation, it's blazing hot, and being in public sprinkler parks when you're not a child generally leads to some serious side-eye. Get through the worst of it with a tall glass of ice water and these chilly reads.

Epistolary Science Fiction

Novels written as a series of documents

I was thinking about epistolary novels recently. These are novels that are written as a series of documents. In the past, these documents might be letters, newspaper clippings, or journal entries. It's Getting Hot in Here

Spring has Sprung! Time to get your hands on some epic eco-apocalypse fiction.

Ah, the apocalypse. Whether it's zombies, asteroids, space invaders, or World War III, I cannot get enough of speculative fiction that explores how humanity will bite the dust. Climate Fiction, a term coined by journalist Dan Bloom, is literature that deals in some way with climate change and its effects. Mix this with the post-apocalyptic subgenre and you get some pretty spectacular speculative science fiction. Cli-Fi books can offer one perspective and help us imagine the consequences that rising sea levels, mass extinctions, and more violent natural disasters could have on our planet.

The Brief History of the Dead

So, You’ve Died. Now What?

Recently I was watching Beetlejuice, and I found the way death was handled to be a fascinating idea. Initially the Maitland family are unaware that they’re even dead. Nobody tells them. They’re just given a handbook, and limited number of visits with a caseworker to get things figured out as they hang out in their home.
