Female Characters with Stories to Tell

Fiction that feels authentic

One thing I love about reading is the opportunity to get lost in someone else's voice. Characters may act differently or make choices I wouldn't, but a great writer helps me understand why - because the characters feel like real people, and real people react in different ways! The following books may not have a lot in common thematically or stylistically, but they all feature female narrators with compelling voices and stories I cared about.

Dream Boy

'Dream Boy'

by Mary Crockett and Madelyn Rosenburg

Sometimes during your life, the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. In Annabelle’s case, the line has completely vanished. Her dreams have become so vivid that she can't tell if she's dreaming or if she's awake. Lately, she’s been dreaming of the perfect boy who gives her the perfect kiss. He haunts her waking thoughts and she draws sketches of him constantly.

Swords and Swoons

Young Adult high fantasy -- with a dash of romance

Swords, magic, political intrigue, and assassination attempts are just a few qualities that can make for an exceptional fantasy novel.  Romantic plotlines, when done well, add levels of tension and emotion that make the best high fantasy even richer and more emotional.  The love stories in these books are not necessarily the major story arc, but they won’t disappoint if you like a side of swoons with your action and adventure.
