Black History isn't limited to February. It is a year-long celebration of joy, triumph and beating unimaginable odds. On Tuesday, Feb. 23, District teens will talk with Soraya Nadia McDonald, culture editor at The Undefeated and Ariel Atkins, guard for the Washington Mystics about claiming your voice, taking risks and becoming the change they want to see in the world as part of a new series called, “Black History Always.”

DC Public Library Black History Month Programs

This February, the DC Public Library celebrates the culture and accomplishments of Black people virtually. Throughout the month, District residents will be able to watch discussions, teen poetry and author talks on the Library’s social media platforms.  Teen Tuesday: Open Mic Night Tuesday, Feb. 2, 4 p.m.

Monte Monash Elected Chair of DC Public Library Board of Trustees

Karma Cottman re-elected Vice-Chair

At last night’s DC Public Library Board of Trustees meeting, Monte Monash was elected chair of the DC Public Board of Trustees. Karma Cottman was re-elected Vice-Chair. The DC Public Library Board of Trustees is composed of nine unpaid District residents from Wards around the city who set policy for the library system. The mayor appoints board members. The D.C. City Council confirms them for a maximum of two five-year terms. The Chair and Vice-Chair will hold their offices for two years or until successors are elected.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library to Remain Closed Thursday

Neighborhood Library Locations to Open Thursday

On Thursday, Jan. 21, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, located at 901 G St. NW, will be closed. All other library locations will be open. The Library will also be open for virtual programming. Visit dclibrary.org or the Library’s app for digital content.

DC Public Library Closed Tuesday and Wednesday for Inauguration

All DC Public Library locations will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and Wednesday, Jan. 20 in support of the District’s preparations for Inauguration Day. The Library is open for virtual programming on Monday and Tuesday. Visit dclibrary.org or the Library’s app for digital content. Additionally, Mayor Bowser announced the District’s use of Nixle for the 59th Presidential Inauguration. HSEMA, in coordination with the United States Park Police, will issue updates on public safety, street closures, weather alerts, transit updates, and more. To sign up, text INAUG2021 to 888-777.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library Closed

Beginning Wednesday, January 13, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, located at 901 G St. NW,  will be closed until further notice.

Statement from Richard Reyes-Gavilan Regarding the Death of Judge Francel Trotter Bellinger

DC Public Library is saddened to learn of the passing of Francel Trotter Bellinger. Judge Bellinger was a passionate, lifelong advocate for library services in the Capitol View and Marshall Heights communities. The original and the beautifully modernized Capitol View Library are a testament to that passion. We are proud to honor her legacy in the library and share it with visitors for many years to come.
