Ello is a digital reading app that provides 1:1 literacy support at a neighborhood library near you! The app uses speech recognition technology to do what a great teacher would do: listen as kids read out loud from real books, provide coaching and correct mistakes, and encourage kids to keep going.
How to Access Ello
Ello is available at eight locations across the District. To access 1:1 reading support with Ello, ask a library staff member at a participating location.
- Anacostia Library
- Cleveland Park Library
- Deanwood Library
- Mt. Pleasant Library
- Palisades Library
- Parklands-Turner Library

- Woodridge Library
iPad use is subject to DC Public Library's Computer Use Guidelines. Ello uses proprietary Adaptive Learn™ speech-recognition technology in kiosk mode. The kiosk version of Ello does not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information. Children can use Ello freely without accounts or logins.
Ello at DC Public Library is brought to you by Beyond the Book. This seasonal program builds on the Books from Birth program, an initiative with Imagination Library that mails a new book each month to children in DC from birth to age 5.
Beyond the Book, generously funded by the DC Public Library Foundation, is a city-wide reading and learning club that engages Books from Birth graduates as well as developing readers across DC around a carefully selected title along with fun and educational learning activities that will deepen their understanding and enjoyment of the book as well as build their reading skills.
