DC Public Library Hires New Director of Safety and Security

The District of Columbia Public Library is happy to announce that Tonya Chapman will be the agency’s new Director of Safety and Security. Ms. Chapman will start in her new role on Monday, June 5, 2023.

“We are excited to have Tonya join us,” said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, Executive Director of DC Public Library. “She has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the law enforcement field and has proven that she is an innovative leader and understands the vital role that safety plays in supporting the use of our buildings.” 

With more than 30 years of law enforcement and public safety experience, Ms. Chapman has demonstrated expertise in leadership, building community trust, collaborative partnerships, community and youth engagement, and strong team management.

Ms. Chapman recently served as Chief of Police for Portsmouth and other law enforcement roles in Arlington and Richmond, Virginia.
